Because of Jim Crow laws and segregation, Black Americans were not typically allowed to attend schools, universities, and colleges for White Americans. Over the years, many dedicated Black educators and others created safe spaces so that African Americans could pursue their education.

Madam C.J. Walker was the first woman of any race that became a millionaire in the U.S. When she lived in Denver, she used her time here to begin to build her very successful business. You just have to come and learn more about this courageous and successful business woman. Upgrades to this exhibit have been generously funded by the Denver Foundation.
Celebrate our first Black President and Vice President (as well as the first woman, Black/South Asian V.P.). Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States in 2008. Kamala Harris was elected at the 49th Vice President of the United States in 2020.
